About The Book

The book titled “Urban Ecosystem and Sustainable Development” incorporates scholarly articles on a very relevant theme.  The 20th century saw an increasing global population due to better medical care, emerging nations in Asia and Africa and overall increase in food supply due to modern agriculture. Productivity increased at the cost of resource extraction. In 2021, more than 56 percent of the World population lived in urban areas.  Population growth places extraordinary demand for natural resources and exceptional stress on natural systems. Over 13 million hectares of forest land are converted to agriculture, urban land use and industrial use annually. These deforestation affects both ecological system of the city and habitats living therein. In addition, roads, and other urban features cause local extinctions, increase mortality rates, and restrict the movement of birds and animals. The urban heat island effect alters precipitation patterns and causes stresses on humans and native species. Urban infrastructure in most cities and megacities are too strained to support the unhindered growth of population. The problem is worse in old cities with expanding population. The pace of climate change has accelerated in recent times due to increasing human intervention. This has resulted intense summer, excessive rainfall, and extreme winter.

The negative effect of the expansion and urbanization itself can be minimized through proper planning and design. The sustainability of the city is possible with the integration of environmental and social objectives with city’s economic and social goals. Our action today will affect our children tomorrow,

The present book might offer an understanding of urban ecosystem, their problems and movement towards sustainable development. It will help the students, research scholars and planners to draw up effective strategies in preparing policies for more sustainable future, balancing environmental protection, social equity, and economic prosperity.
