The Oceans : Realities and Prospects

Man's dependence on the sea and its resources has increased manifold, and therefore, they are the future nucieil of conflicts and linkages among the nations of the world in search of a stable but economically viable oceanic regime. Till recently little was known about the resources of the seabed and the high sea was regarded as the biological desert but now every nation looks towards the oceans with certain expectations to solve their mounting problems of food, energy, re-sources and environment. India is no exception and her future is twined with its waters around. The papers included in this volume, as the Proceedings of First National Symposium on the Oceans held in March, 84 and organised by the Deptt. of Ocean Development Govt. of India and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. \nThe contributors are the distinguished scholars and experts belonging to the various Oceanographic Institutions and Universities in India as well as Government officials meaning the marine environment of India, both from the point of view of economy and strategy. It is for the first time a comprehensive focus is presented on the India's waters.
