The book is the first historical study of the administration in Bengal during the last two decades of the nineteenth century. Attention is concentrated on relations between the Supreme Government and the Local Government, the legislative system in the provincial sphere, the judiciary, the Civil Services, and the police. The author's analytical treatment breaks new ground. Based wholly on primary sources, the narrative is an original contribution to historical knowledge in regard to both collection and integration of facts.
