Self help groups are responsible for the generation of self employment and entrepreneurship by raising the level of income and standard of living among the rural people and weaker sections. The present work is the outcome of a research project carried out in Arambagh subdivision of Hooghly district, West Bengal during 2018-2020. 15 sample villages were selected for this purpose. The primary source of this book is based on specially prepared questionnaire. A door-to-door survey was carried out for this purpose. The authors visited the Swayanvar Gosthi Mela (self help group fair) during this period. Photographs were taken during this time. The authors came to the conclusion that financial support and zeal of the entrepreneurs can uplift the standard of living of the rural mass.

About the Authors

Dr. Jyotirmoy Sen (b.1951) obtained his honours and M.A. degrees in Geography from Presidency College and Ph.d. degree from Calcutta University. He has taught at Siliguri College (1981-2011) and also at Rabindra Bharati University P.G. course (D.D.E.) and Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University. He has written more than 30 books including study materials for distance education and contributed more than 50 research papers in journals and books. He has guided 8 M.Phil. students and also 5 Ph.d. students. Three more students are awaiting for their doctoral degrees. At present, he is a councilor of Netaji Subhash Open University and honorary lecturer at Siliguri Mahila Mahavidyalaya.

Dr. Mobaydul Mallick is an assistant teacher of Kapsit High School (H.S.) of Arambagh, Hooghly district. He has published 5 research papers in different journals. His specialization is economic geography and agricultural geography. He is associate with different social activities and sports.
