India has been experiencing one of the fastest urbanizations in the world. The growth and development of any urban centre largely depends on its basic structural framework comprising of housing, essential civic facilities, means of transport, communication network and various public utility services. The present levels of urban infrastructure are grossly inadequate to meet the demand of the existing urban population. Urban infrastructure exerts immense influence on the pattern and level of economic development and expansion of the urban centre. Urban infrastructures like transport and communication network boost the economy of an urban centre. Social infrastructure like schools, colleges, hospitals and other institutions are necessary for providing educational and health facilities to the residents of a given locality.
Urban infrastructure in India has undergone remarkable development during the recent past. The skyline of Indian cities has come up with impressive buildings, high risers, posh marketing complexes, modern transport channels and supporting infrastructure. The recent development of urban infrastructure and basic amenities is changing the life style of the urban population in some way or the other. A large number of over bridges, flyovers, roads, new sewerage lines, malls, railway station etc., are changing the face of every town in India. The construction and maintenance of these facilities however, adds to the misery of the city dwellers, with traffic congestion, water logging, and pollution of air, water and soil.
As urbanization increased in most of the states in the country, the problem of inadequacy of infrastructure services and deteriorating urban environment became enormous. The growing urban population is mainly absorbed in the low-paid informal sector, as a result of which, a large number of slums are created in and around every metropolitan town. With increasing population, urbanization, migration, consumption rates and waste (water and solid) generation rates, it becomes a herculean task for city administrators to provide basic civic and environmental services.
India is on the road for building world class smart cities that are self sustainable habitats with minimum pollution levels, maximum recycling, optimized energy supplies and efficient public transportation. Our urban planners are trying to develop these new cities with technologically innovative infrastructure working in an environmentally sustainable manner.
This book has been divided into four sections. Section I deals with Growth and Management of Urban Infrastructure in India, Section II contains articles on Urban Services and Amenities, Section III examines Social Infrastructure in India and Section IV deals with the Concept and Planning of Smart Cities in India.
