As a History of the Adil Shahi dynasty this account will appear very meagre; but this volume does not profess to deal with the history of the state, but rather with a description of its architectural remains. A short outline is, however, needful, to make the description of the buildings and references to individuals more intelligible. \nThe short-lived dynasty of Bijapur, the Adil Shahi, passed through a period of incessant wars without its walls, and of constant faction brawls within, Not only was the fair face of the country, around, ploughed up by cavalry and artillery, ever on the moves, but the very courts, within the citadel, were frequently dyed with blood during civil strife. Yet during all those troubles times there were long intervals of comparative calm, when time was found for the erection of those grand piles of architectural of those grand piles of architectural splendour to the memory and glory of its kings and nobles.
