20th Century India witnessed tremendous development in the field of Dance, Theatre and Cinema. The same trend is visible in the case of the North East Indian states too.
The Manipuri dance has its own tradition and heritage rooted in the local environment. The Manipuri dance which is characterised by exquisite hand and body elevated to the status of an Indian classical dance form during the second quarter of the 20th century. The present book gives a comprehensive account of the different forms of Manipuri dance including those of the dominant ethnic communities of the hills. While discussion the nuances of the different forms of Manipuri dance from the angle of a performer and teacher the angle of a performer and teacher the book also argues for strong intervention both from the state government as well as the performers so that its distinct forms could be safeguarded against the onslaught of globalised entertainment industry.

About the Author

R.K. Danisana who had graduated from Kashi Vidyapeeth, Banaras had his early education in Thang-Ta and Manipuri Dance from his father (L) R.K. Surjaboro Sana. During his 35 years of service in Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi; Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, New Delhi and Nepal he travelled extensively both within and outside the country. He is among the early recipient of Cultural Scholarship and also Senior Fellow of Government of India. He has been adorned with 'Nritya Bhushan' of Manipur Sahitya Parishad and 'Fellow' of Manipur State Kala Academy.
